Charles IX died in May 1574, leaving his younger brother to assume the throne as Henry III. The administrative lag in French royal minting meant dies prepared under Charles's authority continued to be used — or newly cut — under Henry's regency, producing this hybrid attribution where Henry III's monetary authority is exercised through Charles IX's nominal name. The 10th type designation reflects the extensive die progression documented by Duplessy across this reign's coinage, a consequence of the multiple provincial mints operating simultaneously under royal licence.
