Obverse description Right-facing bearded bust of Francis I (François Ier), depicted in the antique manner wearing a cuirass decorated in the Renaissance style, with the collar of the Order of Saint Michael draped about the shoulders and a small open crown set upon a chaperon. The effigy presents a strong royal portrait characteristic of the early French teston series. The encircling Latin legend reads: FRANCISCVS : D : G : FRANCOR : REX : R, with an ermine spot as a mint or punctuation mark, translating as 'Francis, by the Grace of God, King of the Franks.'
