Obverse description Right-facing bust of Francis I, depicted in profile wearing an elaborate crown and armored pauldron with decorative floral motifs at the shoulder. The king's hair falls in long locks beneath the crown, rendered in fine relief characteristic of early French Renaissance medallic portraiture. A beaded inner circle frames the effigy, with the Latin royal legend distributed around the periphery. The portrait conveys the humanist influence on French royal coinage of the early sixteenth century, presenting the monarch in a dignified, classicizing manner.
