Additional information

Charles of Lorraine held the see of Verdun from 1610 until his death in 1622, one of several ecclesiastical appointments accumulated by the House of Lorraine during this period of aggressive territorial consolidation through church office. The teston denomination itself was already archaic by this date — French royal coinage had largely abandoned it decades earlier — making its continued use at Verdun a deliberate assertion of episcopal monetary privilege rather than practical currency policy.
