| 正面描述 | Laureate and cuirassed bust of Charles IX facing left, occupying the central field, with the legend commencing at 7 o'clock (19 h). The king is depicted in profile with classical Roman-style armour and a laurel wreath, in the Renaissance portrait manner typical of French royal coinage of the period. The circular Latin legend reads KAROLVS.9.D.G.FRANCOR.REX, identifying the monarch by name and title. |

Charles IX came to the throne at ten years old, and the Teston series issued under his name spans the full dysfunction of his reign — a minority government, Catherine de Medici's regency, and the opening salvos of the Wars of Religion. The 4th type reflects successive monetary ordinances attempting to stabilize silver content as war disrupted bullion supplies and royal finances frayed badly.
The St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre occurred in August 1572, well within this type's production window. Charles died in 1574, aged 23, and the Teston series died with him.
