Obverse description Laureate and armored bust of Charles IX facing left, with a short beard and flowing hair beneath the laurel wreath, dressed in richly decorated Renaissance plate armor with ornamental pauldrons. The mint mark H appears at the base of the portrait. The circular Latin legend surrounding the effigy reads CAROLVS IX D G FRA REX MDLXXIIII H, giving the king's name, title, and the date in Roman numerals.

Reverse description Central field bears the royal arms of France — a shield semé of fleurs-de-lis (three fleurs-de-lis arranged two over one) surmounted by a large royal crown with fleurons and arches. The shield occupies the majority of the reverse field. Surrounding the arms is the Latin pious motto legend, with the date 1574 incorporated into the inscription.
