Charles IV of Lorraine spent much of his reign in exile or captivity, his duchy occupied by French forces for decades across two separate periods of displacement. The "long hair" designation distinguishes this teston type from earlier issues — a stylistic shift reflecting broader European fashion rather than any political statement — and the emission dates fall within his second restoration to Lorraine, between his release from Austrian captivity in 1661 and the French re-annexation of 1670. Actual controlled output during these years was severely limited by the political fragility of his tenure.
