Obverse description The entire face of this hammered billon piece bears a densely arranged cluster of hand-stamped kanji characters in the field. The two principal characters 常是 (Jōze), denoting the official Kinza mint assay mark, are arranged vertically in the center, surrounded on all sides by multiple repetitions of the character 保 (Hō), the era-name stamp certifying issue under the Tenpō period. The characters are applied in a bold, slightly raised relief characteristic of the mameitagin bean-silver tradition, with no border or additional decorative elements. The irregular, plano-convex flan displays a darkly toned surface consistent with the coin's high copper billon composition.
