| Obverse description | The obverse features a central quartered shield device with a beaded border and the legend TEMPERANCE HALF PENNY around the upper periphery and the date 1840 in the exergue. The upper two quarters of the shield depict a standing figure before a rising sun inscribed HEALTH, and a bird carrying a branch inscribed PEACE; the lower half shows a townscape with a church steeple and smoking chimney inscribed COMPETENCE.
