Additional information

Shahrukh, fourth son of Timur, inherited the eastern Timurid domains after years of fratricidal conflict and consolidated rule from Herat rather than Samarkand. Tabriz, however, sat at the western edge of his reach — contested, commercially vital, and periodically subject to Turkmen pressure from the Qara Qoyunlu confederation. Coins struck there under Shahrukh's authority carried political weight beyond their exchange value, asserting Timurid legitimacy in a city that had reason to doubt it.

The tanka as a denominational unit had been inherited and adapted from earlier Mongol and post-Mongol monetary practice across Central Asia. Tabriz mint output from this reign is notably less common than issues from Herat or Samarkand.
