The upper line carries the Shahada 'La ilaha illa Allah' (There is no god but God), the middle line reads 'Muhammad rasul Allah' (Muhammad is the messenger of God), and the lower line reads 'Ali wali Allah' (Ali is the guardian of God), reflecting the Shaybanid acknowledgment of Shi'a formulae on coinage struck at Mashhad. The surrounding field shows residual flatness and surface marks characteristic of hammered silver coinage, with the inscription partially running toward the rim on the irregular flan. |
