The Crown Talar of Stanisław August was struck during one of the most politically turbulent stretches in Polish history — the years bracketing the First Partition of 1772, when Prussia, Russia, and Austria collectively stripped roughly 30% of the Commonwealth's territory and over a third of its population. Poniatowski, effectively a client monarch installed through Russian pressure and the personal influence of Catherine II, used coinage reform as one of the few levers of domestic policy genuinely available to him.
The Warsaw Mint reorganized its silver standards under the 1766 monetary reform, and the Crown Talar series ran across multiple die marriages catalogued separately by Kopicki — small but traceable differences in the king's portrait and reverse execution distinguish the Kop#2458 through Kop#2466 variants.
