These talers were struck at Kraków during one of the most catastrophic periods in Polish-Lithuanian history. Jan II Kazimierz had assumed the throne in 1648 — the same year the Khmelnytsky Uprising shattered the Commonwealth's eastern territories and the Cossack-Tatar forces inflicted devastating defeats at Batih and Zborów. The talar issues of 1649–1650 coincide almost exactly with the negotiations and signing of the Treaty of Zboriv in August 1649, which forced painful territorial concessions.
The Kopicki references span multiple die pairings from these two years, each documenting minor variations in the Kraków workshop's output under mintmaster supervision.
