Additional information

Jan II Kazimierz had been king for barely a year when this talar was struck at Bydgoszcz, a mint that operated intermittently under lease arrangements with private minters — a common but administratively chaotic practice in the Commonwealth that made quality control deeply inconsistent. The 1650 emission preceded by just a year the Deluge, the catastrophic Swedish invasion that would destroy the Polish monetary system, scatter the mint infrastructure, and force the king himself into Silesian exile. Talars of this period circulated internationally as much as domestically, functioning in Baltic trade networks alongside Dutch leeuwendaalders and Hamburg issues.
