Toruń held the rare privilege of minting its own municipal coinage under royal license, a right fiercely defended by the city's patriciate throughout the seventeenth century. These szelągi were struck during one of the most financially exhausted periods in Polish history — Jan II Kazimierz's reign had burned through treasury reserves fighting the Swedish Deluge, the Cossack uprisings, and a simultaneous Muscovite war. Billon coinage of this fineness was essentially a fiscal stopgap, the crown's way of keeping small change in circulation without committing silver.
