Additional information

Stefan Batory came to the Polish throne in 1576 as something of a compromise candidate — a Transylvanian prince elected after the chaotic interregnum following the flight of Henri de Valois. His reign demanded constant military financing, and the szeląg was the workhorse denomination that kept small commerce moving while larger denominations funded campaigns against Muscovy. The Olkusz mint was chosen for its proximity to the silver mines of the Kraków-Częstochowa upland, giving it a logistical advantage over other Crown minting centers.

Kop. 458–484 spans a wide die range, reflecting nearly a decade of continuous production at the facility.
