The szeląg was already an anachronism when Poniatowski's mint resumed striking them in 1776 — a petty copper denomination whose purchasing power had been eroded to near nothing by decades of monetary chaos under Saxon rule. The Warsaw mint produced these through 1792, the year the Second Partition effectively ended the Commonwealth's capacity to govern itself, let alone manage a currency.
Kopicki distinguishes two varieties under 2162 and 2163, separated by minor die differences that remain a quiet obsession among Polish series specialists.
