The szeląg (solidus) occupied the lowest tier of the Commonwealth's silver coinage, and by the 1590s Sigismund III was wrestling with a chronically debased monetary supply inherited from his predecessors. The Bydgoszcz mint, reopened under lease arrangements typical of the period, was one of several provincial facilities pressed into service to flood the market with small-denomination silver — a policy that generated profit for leaseholders but contributed to persistent Gresham's Law dynamics as better coins were hoarded or exported.
Kop. 662 is among the more localized varieties of this type, distinguishable by die characteristics specific to the Bydgoszcz output of 1597.
