Obverse description Hammered gold flan bearing a multi-line Arabic tughra-style legend in flowing Thuluth script occupying the entire field. The inscription names the sultan, his lineage, and includes the mint name Aleppo (Haleb) together with the regnal year 1003 AH. The field is undecorated save for the calligraphic legend, and the coin is bordered by a continuous ring of raised beads. The irregular flan and bold, raised script are characteristic of late sixteenth-century Ottoman hammered gold coinage.
