| Obverse description | Central cross pattée occupies the field, with the legend +VLFHEDARED disposed retrograde around the periphery in debased Late Anglo-Saxon letterforms. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, characteristic of late Northumbrian styca production. The inscription names Archbishop Wulfhere of York, the issuing ecclesiastical authority. Letter forms are crude and variable, consistent with the degenerate die-cutting typical of Phase IIc stycas. |
