In 1820, Sint Maarten's Dutch administration faced a chronic shortage of small change — a problem endemic across the Caribbean colonies — and resolved it by countermarking French Guianese stuivers, the so-called "Cayenne stuivers" originally struck for Cayenne. The SM punch combined with a fleur-de-lis revalidated these coins for local circulation, effectively drafting another colony's currency into service. The fleur-de-lis choice is pointed: the underlying coins were themselves French issues, and the mark simultaneously acknowledged and appropriated that origin.
No official mintage figure was recorded. The countermarking was a local administrative act, not a metropolitan one, which is why this type carries no KM number.
