Obverse description Plain field bearing the abbreviated provincial inscription in two horizontal lines in bold Roman lettering, with the date struck below in the lower portion of the field. A stylized rosette ornament appears at the top and bottom of the central legend, serving as decorative stops. The overall design is characteristically sparse, consistent with the utilitarian hammered coinage of the Dutch provincial issues of the late seventeenth century. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, typical of the hand-struck production method employed at the Groningen mint during this period.

Obverse lettering GRON. ET OML.
