| Obverse description | Facing crowned bust of Bishop William of Avesnes rendered in low relief in the hammered style typical of late 13th-century episcopal sterlings. The bishop's face is depicted frontally with stylised hair or mitre flanking either side, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A circular legend in uncial Latin characters runs between the inner beaded circle and the coin's irregular outer edge, reading + GVILLS: EPISCOPVS, identifying the issuing prelate. The overall style closely follows the English short-cross sterling prototype adapted for ecclesiastical Flemish coinage. |
