Beschrijving voorzijde Facing bareheaded bust of Count Arnold V in high relief at center, rendered in a schematic medieval style with short hair indicated by incised lines and prominent facial features. The effigy is set within a beaded inner circle, around which runs the circular legend in uncial lettering. The bust is depicted with a wide, flat face and stylized drapery at the shoulders, characteristic of late 13th-century Low Countries sterling coinage.

Aanvullende informatie

Arnold V ruled Loon during a period when the English long cross penny — the "sterling" — had so thoroughly dominated commercial exchange across the Low Countries that regional lords minted direct imitations simply to participate in trade on equal footing with English coin. The County of Loon, a small territory in what is now Belgian Limburg, was absorbed into the Prince-Bishopric of Liège shortly after Arnold V's death in 1323, ending its independent coinage entirely.
