Arnold V ruled Loon during a period when the county was caught between the competing ambitions of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and the Duchy of Brabant. His sterlings were part of a broader Low Countries imitation coinage triggered by the commercial dominance of English sterling in regional trade — Flemish, Brabantine, and smaller lordships all struck types borrowing the format because English coin was simply trusted more than local issues.
