Obverse description Centrally placed shield bearing the arms of Basel — a black crozier on a divided field — rendered in low relief within a plain inner circle. The shield is of late-medieval pointed form, characteristic of Swiss municipal heraldic coinage of the early fifteenth century. A beaded border encircles the inner circle, forming the outermost decorative element of the coin's face. The fields surrounding the shield are flat and unlettered, consistent with the minimal design conventions of small fractional hammered coinage of this period.
