The design is dominated by a prominent circular eye motif at center, surrounded by swirling curvilinear elements representing a disintegrated facial profile. Lenticular forms, pellets, and sinuous relief lines fill the field, creating a dynamic, almost non-representational composition characteristic of Belgic coinage. Additional abstract elements, including a lyre-shaped or anchor-like symbol to the lower right and linear decorative strokes to the left, fill the field. The Suessiones occupied the Aisne valley in what is now Picardy, and by the mid-first century BC they were among the most powerful of the Belgic tribes — Caesar himself described their king Diviciacus as having once held authority over Britain as well as much of Gaul. This stater was almost certainly struck in the years immediately preceding Caesar's Belgic campaigns of 57 BC, when the confederation of tribes along the Aisne mobilized against Roman advance and were broken at the battle of the Axona.
The type is catalogued across five major reference systems without significant die-variety dispute, suggesting a relatively consistent and controlled issue.
