The Selsey S-Type takes its name from the Sussex peninsula where hoards of Atrebatic gold have repeatedly surfaced, a region that served as the tribal heartland before Roman administrative reorganization absorbed it into Britannia. Caesar's two expeditions of 55 and 54 BC directly destabilized the political networks among the southern British tribes, and the coinage of this period reflects that disruption — gold staters continued circulating as instruments of inter-tribal payment, mercenary hire, and diplomatic gift exchange rather than anything resembling a market economy. The abstract swirling derived from Macedonian prototypes had, by this issue, drifted so far from its origins that the connection to Philip II's coinage is traceable only through die progression studies.
