| Reverse description | Jugate or facing busts of the co-ruling Roman emperors Septimius Severus, laureate, facing right, and Caracalla, draped, facing left, displayed in the customary Bosporan dynastic homage format acknowledging Roman suzerainty. The Bosporan regnal year date ZqΥ (497 in the Bosporan Era, corresponding to AD 200–201) appears in the lower field. The reverse composition reflects the political alliance between the Bosporan Kingdom and the Severan dynasty, a recurring feature of electrum stater coinage of this reign. |

Sauromates II ruled the Bosporan Kingdom as a client of Rome, and these joint-reign issues — naming both Septimius Severus and Caracalla — were a calculated display of dynastic loyalty at a moment when Severus was consolidating power after the civil wars of 193–197. The Bosporan electrum stater tradition was already centuries old by this point, but the gold content had been declining steadily for generations; by Sauromates II's reign, the alloy was considerably debased from earlier issues in the series.
