Rhoemetalces ruled the Bosporan Kingdom as a client king under Roman suzerainty, and this stater — struck in the year 135 CE by the local Bosporean era reckoning — belongs to the joint-reign coinage that explicitly pairs his authority with that of Hadrian. The Bosporan gold stater series is one of the longest continuously struck gold coinage traditions in the ancient world, running largely unbroken from the late fourth century BCE into the third century CE, always calibrated to maintain Roman diplomatic goodwill.
Anokhin's numbering distinguishes two die variants for this year, reflected in the dual references 1653–1654.
