Philip III Arrhidaeus was Alexander's half-brother, intellectually disabled from birth — possibly due to poisoning in infancy, ancient sources suggest by Olympias — and functioned as a puppet king under the control of successive regents following Alexander's death in 323 BC. The Babylon mint continued striking in Alexander's name and types throughout this period, making attribution to Philip III's reign dependent almost entirely on die-linkage studies and control mark analysis rather than any explicit royal identification on the coin itself.
Price's posthumous Alexander corpus places this piece within a tightly defined Babylonian sequence. Philip III was murdered by Olympias in 317 BC, ending a reign that was administrative fiction from its first day.
