Vercingetorix united the Gallic tribes against Caesar in 52 BC, and the Arverni — whose territory centered on what is now the Auvergne — were at the political core of that coalition. This stater was almost certainly struck to finance that campaign, possibly including the payment of mercenaries and allied chieftains. The type is directly associated with the Gallic War rather than routine tribal commerce.
Vercingetorix surrendered at Alesia in 52 BC and was held in Rome for six years before being executed following Caesar's triumph in 46 BC.
