The hair is depicted in flowing striated locks swept back from the forehead. The circular legend ΒΑϹΙΛΕΩϹ ΚΟΤΥΟϹ (King Kotys) runs around the periphery of the flan, bordered by a beaded toothed outer rim. The portrait, while reflecting Hellenistic royal conventions, retains a distinctly provincial artistic character typical of Bosporan coinage of the third century AD.
