| Obverse description | Highly stylized and deeply struck Celtic interpretation of an Apollo head, rendered in bold relief with curvilinear La Tène artistic conventions. The face is presented in a schematic frontal aspect with abstracted facial features, surrounded by flowing locks of hair dissolving into decorative crescentic and pellet motifs. The design retains only vestigial references to the original Hellenistic prototype, having been substantially transformed through successive Celtic die-cutting into a dynamic, abstract composition. The field is uneven and characteristic of the irregular flan typical of British Iron Age gold coinage. |
