Struck at Magnesia ad Maeandrum during the immediate aftermath of Alexander's death in Babylon, this issue falls within the regency of Perdiccas and then Antipater — a period of violent instability as the Diadochi began carving up the empire. The mint at Magnesia was operating under shifting authority, yet continued producing coinage in Alexander's name as if nothing had changed, a deliberate fiction of continuity that all factions found convenient.
