Abydos, positioned at the narrowest crossing of the Hellespont, was a strategically critical mint — one Alexander activated precisely because of its proximity to the Asian campaign route. Coins struck here after Alexander's death in 323 BC continued under his name as a deliberate political act, maintaining the fiction of dynastic continuity during the savage scramble among the Diadochi. Price 1525 is attributed to the transitional period when Leonnatus, then briefly Antipater, held nominal authority over the region.
