These staters were struck to fund Alexander's campaigns deep into Persia and Central Asia — the gold drawn directly from captured Achaemenid treasury hoards at Persepolis and Susa, which reportedly contained bullion accumulated over generations of tribute. The sheer volume of that captured wealth forced a massive minting operation across dozens of traveling and newly established mints, which is why die linkage studies for this period are extraordinarily complex.
Price 3129 places this emission within the Amphipolis mint sequence, one of the most prolific of the Macedonian royal mints throughout Alexander's reign.
