Sinope was one of the most prosperous Greek colonies on the Black Sea coast, and its decision to strike gold staters in Alexander's name — decades after his death in 323 BC — reflects how thoroughly his monetary system had displaced local traditions across the region. By the early third century, "Alexander coinage" had become effectively a trade currency, and cities like Sinope issued it not out of political allegiance but commercial necessity.
Price 1540 places this issue firmly in the posthumous series. The Sinope mint operated intermittently, and its Alexander staters are considerably scarcer than those from the major Macedonian mints.
