Salamis was the dominant city-kingdom on Cyprus during Alexander's eastern campaigns, and its king Nikokreon was among the Cypriot rulers who supported Alexander's siege of Tyre in 332 BC — providing ships that proved critical to that operation. These gold staters struck in Alexander's name at Salamis represent a direct political alignment: Nikokreon adopting Macedonian coin types as a signal of loyalty and integration into the new imperial order, while retaining his own mint's production.
Price 3138 is attributed to Salamis on the basis of die linkage studies and stylistic analysis of the engraving. Cyprus had a long tradition of skilled die cutters, and Salaminian output is distinguishable from contemporary mainland issues.
