Stater - in name of Alexander III Kallatis

Kallatis, a Black Sea Greek colony on the western Pontic coast (modern Mangalia, Romania), struck posthumous Alexander staters under its own civic authority during the mid-third century BC. The city had a turbulent history in this period — it endured a prolonged siege by Lysimachus earlier in the century and later became entangled in the wars between the Macedonian successor states and the growing power of Thrace. Local issuance of Alexander-type gold served practical monetary needs while asserting civic standing in a commercially active but politically pressured region.

Price 902 is among the less commonly encountered Pontic civic issues in the posthumous Alexander series.
