Diademed and draped bust of King Eupator facing right, rendered in the Hellenistic portrait tradition. The king's elaborate coiffure and flowing drapery are depicted with fine relief detail characteristic of Bosporan gold staters of this period. A dotted border frames the design. The legend ΒΑϹΙΛΕΩϹ ΕΥΠΑΤΟΡΟϹ ('of King Eupator') runs around the periphery in Greek characters. Occasionally a club appears in the field before the bust as an additional symbol. |

Confronted jugate busts of the co-ruling Roman emperors: the bare-headed, cuirassed and paludamentum-draped bust of Lucius Verus facing right, and the bare head of Marcus Aurelius facing left, presented as facing busts in the Bosporan dynastic tradition. The date monogram ΗΝΥ, corresponding to the Bosporan era year 459 (= 162 AD), appears in the field. The composition reflects the formal recognition of the Roman imperial college by the Bosporan client kingdom. |
