| Beschrijving keerzijde | A deeply struck quadripartite incuse square divided by a raised cross into four recessed compartments, each containing an irregular, roughly textured surface typical of early archaic hammered coinage. The incuse design reflects the standard reverse technique employed by Thraco-Macedonian mints during the late Archaic period, serving primarily as a mechanical countermark to the obverse type rather than as an independent decorative design. The square incuse is set centrally within the broad, plain flan. |

Ennea Hodoi — "Nine Roads" — was the strategic crossing point on the Strymon River that Athens attempted to colonize in 465 BC, losing 10,000 settlers to the Edonian Thracians at the disaster of Drabescus. This stater predates that catastrophe, struck when the site and its surrounding silver-rich hinterland remained under loose indigenous control. The Thraco-Macedonian tribes of this region produced coinage of remarkable technical quality during this window, drawing on local Pangaion silver before Athenian and later Macedonian power consolidated the mining districts.
