The Senones occupied territory in what is now the Yonne and Loiret departments of north-central France, and are best remembered in ancient sources for sacking Rome around 390 BC — an event that left a deep enough wound on Roman collective memory that Livy devoted considerable attention to it centuries later. By the time these staters were struck in the final decades of the second century BC, the tribe was operating under increasing pressure from Roman expansion into Gaul, and coin production was becoming compressed and irregular. The "bullet type" denomination reflects a late Gaulish tendency toward abstract, globular forms as die-cutting traditions fragmented under political stress.
