Reverse description Bare head of Aspurgus, king of the Bosporan Kingdom, facing right, with short wavy hair rendered in a style closely echoing Roman imperial portraiture. To the left of the portrait appears the royal monogram surmounting the legend ΒΑΡ (abbreviation of ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΣΠΟΥΡΓΟΥ, 'of King Aspurgus'), while below the truncation the regnal date ΓΙΤ (year 313 of the Bosporan era, corresponding to 17 AD) is inscribed within an exergual panel. The composition is unbordered and struck on a slightly irregular planchet typical of hammered Bosporan gold coinage.
