| Obverse description | Griffin seated left in high relief, the body rendered with fine detail showing musculature and layered wing feathers fanning upward and to the right. The creature raises its right foreleg in a characteristic alert posture, with the lion's hindquarters firmly grounded and the tail curling behind. The eagle-like beak is open and the head is turned slightly upward, conveying a sense of dynamism. The design occupies nearly the entire flan, with the field left plain around the figure. The style is characteristic of the accomplished die-cutters of Abdera during the classical period. |
