To the right of the thunderbolt, the head of an eagle faces left. The Greek legend ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ / ΤΟΥ ΝΕΟΠΤΟΛΕΜΟΥ is distributed in two lines to the left and right of the central device, identifying the issuing king Alexander I of Epeiros, son of Neoptolemos. The composition is spare and heraldic, consistent with the official royal coinage struck at Taras during Alexander's Italian campaign. |
