Struck at Magnesia ad Maeandrum during the final two years of Alexander's life, this issue belongs to the last concentrated phase of his military coinage — produced to pay troops actively campaigning in the east. Price 1928 is among the better-documented of the Magnesia staters, a mint that operated under close Macedonian administrative control during Alexander's push through Persia and into India.
Alexander's gold stater issues were deliberately standardized across dozens of mints to function as a trans-imperial military currency. Magnesia struck relatively conservatively compared to prolific western mints like Amphipolis.
