| 裏面の説明 | Pegasos, the winged horse, depicted in vigorous flight to the left, with forelegs extended and hindquarters raised in a dynamic galloping pose. The large, sharply detailed wings are spread upward and outward, rendered with carefully incised feathering in the Sicilian style. The musculature of the body and the flowing tail are modelled with confident relief. Beneath the horse, in the lower field, appears a triskeles — the three-legged symbol emblematic of Sicily — serving as a mint control mark. The field is otherwise plain and uninscribed. |

Agathokles seized power in Syracuse in 317 BC through a coup that killed several thousand citizens in the assembly — a founding act of violence that colored his entire reign. He ruled first as general with full powers, then declared himself king around 304 BC, becoming the first Sicilian ruler to adopt the title. His silver coinage reflects that political trajectory: issues from the early period differ subtly in style and titulature from those struck after the royal proclamation, and attributing a specific stater to one phase or the other requires close attention to the magistrate controls and die axis.
