Thyrrheion was a mid-tier Akarnanian polis whose federal coinage participation reflects the broader political project of the Akarnanian League — a confederacy that spent much of the fourth century maneuvering between Macedonian pressure from the north and Aetolian aggression from the east. These staters were struck as league-affiliated federal issues, not purely municipal ones, which is why the iconographic program aligns so closely with other Akarnanian mints of the period rather than asserting a distinct civic identity.
The Pegasi corpus remains the essential reference for this series, though die linkage studies have since complicated earlier attributions.
