Obverse description Facing right, the draped bust of the nymph Hypereia, her hair bound with a wreath of reeds; she wears a triple-pendant earring and a pearl necklace. Behind her head, a lion-head water spout is depicted with streams of water issuing from its open jaws, an allusion to the sacred spring of Hypereia at Pherae. The rendering is characteristic of the refined Thessalian engraving tradition of the early third century BC.
